Hull hospitals scan more patients with AI technology - BBC

🔍 Summary:

NHS hospitals in Hull are experiencing significant improvements in MRI scan efficiency thanks to new AI technology. The software, known as Air Recon Deep Learning (ARDL), has been implemented at Hull Royal Infirmary and Castle Hill Hospital, with plans to expand to Scunthorpe General Hospital and Diana, Princess of Wales Hospital in Grimsby. By using algorithms to reduce background noise, the ARDL software enhances image quality and reduces scan times by 10 to 15 minutes on average. This reduction has decreased the duration of routine MRI head scans from 30 to 20 minutes and prostate scans from 45 to 30 minutes. As a result, the hospitals can now handle more patients—31 lumbar spine scans in 12 hours, up from 21. The shorter scan times also benefit patients who struggle with claustrophobia or have learning disabilities, making the scans more tolerable for them and reducing the need for general anaesthesia in children undergoing MRI scans.
