Chatbots Are Writing Key Parts of Biomedical Papers - Newser

🔍 Summary:

A recent study published in Science Advances suggests that a significant number of biomedical research papers may be utilizing artificial intelligence tools like ChatGPT to assist in writing abstracts. Researchers estimate that about 14% of these abstracts show signs of AI involvement. This conclusion was reached not through surveys but by identifying specific words that AI tends to use more frequently than humans, such as “delves,” “crucial,” “potential,” and “accentuates,” among over 450 others. Dmitry Kobak from the University of Tubingen, one of the study’s authors, expressed surprise that researchers would rely on AI for such a critical task as writing paper abstracts. He also noted that their own research did not use AI assistance. Additionally, Mingmeng Geng of the Ecole Normale Superieure in Paris pointed out that as AI tools evolve to use a less detectable vocabulary, the actual percentage of AI-assisted abstracts might be even higher than reported, especially as authors become more adept at avoiding detection.
